Between 2003/4, a staggering 3,560 domestic properties in Birmingham alone had extensions granted on their homes - an 88% increase.

Birmingham, like many other UK cities, has experienced tremendous growth in house prices during the last ten years with the average three bedroom family home now costing more than GBP156,000 [Source: Nationwide]

With this in mind, Sedgley-based brick manufacturer, Baggeridge, has found that during the last five years there has been a significant shift in attitudes towards moving house and has discovered that an increasing number of people - even celebrities such as Chris Tarrant - are now opting for household extensions instead of taking the plunge with moving.

Between 2003/4, a staggering 3,560 domestic properties in Birmingham alone had extensions granted on their homes compared to 99/2000 when there were just 1,897 - representing an increase of 88 per cent.

[Source: Office of the Deputy Prime Minister] Mark Morris, sales director at Baggeridge believes that this trend looks set to continue rising as house prices continue to fluctuate.

"Extending the family house is a far more popular and stress free alternative to moving home," said Mark.

"And this demand for home extensions has had a positive affect on our business because the sheer demand for our bricks has risen".

Mark adds: "In response to this, we have extended our range of bricks specifically for the refurbishment market to include a wide selection of colours, textures and sizes." But it's not just Brummies who favour home extensions, when compared to the rest of the region Wolverhampton and Walsall also rank highly in the poll.

Town/City % Increase:.

Birmingham 1897 to 3560 88%.

Wolverhampton 461 to 796 72%.

Walsall 779 to 1313 69%.

Coventry 686 to 1080 57%.

Dudley 801 to 1349 68%.

Solihull 1269 to 1676 32%.

Mark adds: All regions differ in size and we fully acknowledge this.

However, the statistics are an interesting reflection of how people's attitudes have changed in a relatively short period of time when it comes to the decisions they are making about their family home.
