Wigan Metropolitan Borough Council has specified Baggeridge Brick's innovative cladding system, Corium, at a brand new school.

Wigan Metropolitan Borough Council has specified the use of Baggeridge Brick's innovative cladding system, Corium, to facilitate the construction of a brand new school.

Woodfield Junior and Infant School is a new-build one form entry school on Wigan Lane, Wigan which accommodates up to 210 pupils.

The new 1500 m2 building, situated above the Douglas River Valley, has been constructed on a site that already housed a one form entry primary school with a main school building built in 1945 and prefabricated classroom extensions dating back to 1960.

The steel framed building features a pitched roof, aluminium windows which are powder coated white on the inside of the building and blue on the outside and double-glazed with toughened outer and laminated inner panes and walls that are clad with over 815 m2 of Corium tiles in a selection of colours including buff, smooth and blue.

This recent specification of Corium follows on from the success of Wigan Council's previous experience of using the product to construct a brand new SureStart Centre in the town.

Derek Gee director of architecture for NPS North West said: "It was crucial the project was completed in as short a time as possible".

"The use of Corium, which can be laid much faster than traditional brickwork, helped us meet these objectives given that the project was completed in just a few months while at the same time also contributed to significant labour saving costs".

The building was designed by Architects and Building Services Engineers from NPS North West , with Structural Engineers from Bradshaw, Gass and Hope and was built for Wigan Metropolitan Borough Council by F.
