Sedgley-based brick manufacturer, Baggeridge, has recently completed its biggest project to date for its fast track cladding system, Corium.

The GBP24m PFI contract for Salisbury District Hospital in Wiltshire has seen Baggeridge deploy 2600 m2 of Corium Red and Brown Sand faced to a new Burns Unit and extension.

The colours were specially developed to blend in harmoniously with the existing building.

The revolutionary patented Corium system comprises genuine brick tiles which have been specially designed to fix mechanically to a HPS200 steel backing section.

These are then mounted in rows onto the backing structure and the tiles are clipped into place.

It's ideal for refurbishment projects as the cladding is light and can be fixed up to ten storeys high, yet still maintains its strength and durability.

Contractor, MJ Gleeson selected Corium based on a number of key factors - maintenance, speed and weight, therefore reducing scaffold and structural costs.

Andy Tolfree, project manager said: "Before the selection process began, we had a number of criteria to fulfil.

Although cost was an important factor, so too was the overall performance of the product in terms of its ease and simplicity of installation and overall upkeep.

"Corium passed a thorough technical assessment, carried out by ourselves and architects, Chapman Taylor, as well as a detailed analysis of test results obtained in order to secure the BRE Certificate".

ECL Contracts installed the external facade utilising a lightweight steel frame and the Corium system to meet the objectives of the design team and the programme restrictions imposed by the main contractor.

Malcolm Smith, construction director, said: "Once operatives and supervisors were familiar with the system, the works progressed to achieve the tight deadlines and a weather tight envelope so that the internal works could progress".

Phil Noble, technical director for Baggeridge said: "The application of Corium was seamless and the flexibility of the installation allowed work to be undertaken on the main facades and the internal courtyards at different periods".

Concluding, Phil said: "This project has been a positive learning curve for us and one that enables us to start our forthcoming large schemes with great confidence.".
