More Balfour Beatty Work on Santiago
Metro
Balfour Beatty Chile SA (BB Chile awarded the contracts to construct the track for two extensions to two lines on the Santiago Metro in Chile.
The total value of the contract is GBP37 million Awarded by Empresa de Transporte de Pasajeros Metro SA the works involve the construction of the track on a 4km extension on Line 1 from Escuela Militar, valued at GBP10.2 million, together with the construction of the track on a 14.2km extension on Line 5 Quinta Normal, valued at GBP26.7 million

Under the contracts, Balfour Beatty will supply and install the trackwork, components and develop the projects for the trackwork system on the new extensions.
It is Balfour Beatty's second project on the Santiago Metro, following its construction of Lines 4 and 4A on the network, which opened in 2005 and 2006.
Manfred Leger, Balfour Beatty Group Managing Director, Rail, said: "With this contract, we will be looking to further build upon the successes achieved by our work on Lines 4 and 4A.
The guaranteed presence in Chile for the next three years also gives us the opportunity to grow within the South American rail market." Lines 1, 2 and 5 on the Metro de Santiago network are notable as they employ a rubber-tyred track system while Lines 4 and 4A of the Santiago Metro network use a steel-wheel track system.
Detailed design works are now underway on the respective projects with the Line 1 trackwork extension set for completion in September 2009 and the Line 5 trackwork extension set to complete in September 2010.
