Scottish Power windfarm connection projects

A Balfour Beatty product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team Nov 20, 2008

Balfour Beatty Utility Solutions, the leading UK utility solutions provider has been awarded two programme of works from ScottishPower Energy Networks, valued at nearly GBP20million.

The first project will see the connection of Clyde Windfarm into the transmission network over a 22 month period, starting in March next year.

It involves the installation of two 275kV single circuit cable connections, connecting the windfarm into ScottishPower Energy Networks' newly commissioned Elvanfoot Substation in South Lanarkshire.

The second project will see the connection of Crystal Rig windfarm to the 400kV overhead line transmission network.

The six month programme of works, starting in May next year, will see the connection of the second phase of the 62.5 Megawatt windfarm to the network to the south of Dunbar in the Scottish Borders region.

This project involves the installation of a new junction tower and an optical path ground wire along 57km of the transmission line route, from Smeaton 400kV Substation to Torness Substation, as part of ScottishPower Energy Networks' ongoing programme of works to connect new windfarm capacity to the transmission network in Scotland.

Tony Scott, BBUS Operations Director (Power) said: "We are delighted to have been awarded these programme of works from ScottishPower Energy Networks - our expertise and knowledge of the transmission network in Scotland have helped us to be selected for the project.

"These projects will help the Scottish Government meet its ambitious targets for supporting Scotland's electricity demand from renewable resources, and we are proud to be a part of this process.
