Britannia Eco-Plus Policy for greener homes

Britannia's Eco-plus programme aims to reduce the standard carbon emission of its homes by over 5% further than the 20% required by the Government's latest building regulations.

Yorkshire house-builder, Britannia Developments, is playing its part in the effort to tackle climate change with a new company policy introducing extra measures to promote ecologically friendly construction.

Britannia's Eco-plus programme aims to reduce the standard carbon emission of its homes by over 5% further than the 20% required by the Government's latest building regulations.

The policy will also involve using timber from sustainably managed forests and architectural technology that minimises heat loss and air leakage.

In addition, Britannia is committed to planting up to 5,000 trees on future developments from now until 2015.

"Developers have an opportunity to take a lead in promoting ecologically friendly design and construction," said Scott Leather, Britannia's commercial manager.

"The amount that can be done to improve existing domestic properties is, of course, invariably restricted by a number of factors, but house-builders are in a position to set a workable blueprint for all future homes".

"That's why Britannia has introduced Eco-plus".

"The key objective of the Government's legislation is to address the 'carbon footprint' of new dwellings - in other words, to reduce their carbon dioxide emission," explained Scott.

"They require a 20% improvement from the standards set by the previous legislation, but Britannia is committed to achieving better results than that figure and we have a number of initiatives in place which extend beyond the parameters of the latest regulations".

"These measures include investment in high-tech glazing, condensing boilers with industry leading efficiencies and high specification insulation fabric which achieves twice the thermal performance of standard materials".

"Our planting policy will introduce younger trees which have higher levels of photosynthesis".

"We will be assessing the possible use of technology such as integrated solar heating, geothermal heat pumps and miniature wind turbines at future developments".

"The Government is targeting Zero Carbon Homes by the year 2015, but we are confident that Britannia will reach that goal much sooner".
