Green Glue soundproofing for Comfort Inn
WM Brown Construction has specified Green Glue to provide soundproofing solutions for the Comfort Inn and Suites in Colarado.
The single biggest complaint from guests at hotels is noise.
In a service industry where customer satisfaction reigns supreme, an unhappy customer is not a repeat customer.
So when the Comfort Inn and Suites in Aurora, CO, was due for refurbishment, addressing its noise challenges was a top priority.
WM Brown Construction was selected to help with the general renovation and to offer specialist consultation on noise issues.
Mary Anderson, at WM Brown says, "Eliminating noise between rooms was a particularly important focus for the project so we made it our priority to seek out the best solution".
Her product supplier offered a brief synopsis of the application process and benefits of Green Glue and she was sold.
Remembers Anderson, "After looking at some alternative soundproofing methods, including soundboard and fiberglass paneling, we immediately saw the advantages of Green Glue.
From a cost-standpoint Green Glue was a real winner, not only because of the cost-to-performance ratio, but also because it can be used with standard drywall, making it more cost-effective when custom, irregular sized pieces need to be cut.
With Green Glue you just cut what you need rather than worrying about the expense of wasting pricy soundboard".
But Green Glue also made sense from a construction perspective," she says.
"By using Green Glue we only had to add one layer of 5/8" drywall to the existing wall, which is a very non-intrusive addition.
Had we used the thicker paneling typical of most soundboards we would have had to modify the door frames, window frames and other molding features in each room".
In addition to being easy to use, it was also very low impact on the hotel.
The typical measurement system used to determine the degree to which a wall can stop sound transmission is STC (or Sound Transmission Class).
The higher the STC score, the lower the amount of sound transmission occurring from one room to the other and the quieter the connecting room.
Walls containing just a layer of drywall typically register an STC level of 33-36.
However, an application of Green Glue Noiseproofing Compound and an additional layer of drywall will improve the STC score to 45 or higher - a decrease in sound transmission by up to 90 percent.
"Given that loud television sets were the biggest issue that guests had complained about an informal test was all that we needed to know that our efforts had paid off," she explains.
"The results were really shocking - none of us believed how well the product worked".
