BBA announce that Greg Cooper has been appointed Chief Executive.

With the retirement of Peter Hewlett as the BBA's Chief Executive on 2nd June 2005 after 17 years' service, the BBA is announce that Greg Cooper has been appointed Chief Executive Peter is an internationally renowned figure in the field of construction materials - especially concrete - and the chemistry that surrounds them

After a classical academic background - first degree then postgraduate qualification, he became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry in 1972 and a Chartered Chemist in 1975.

Prior to joining the BBA, he worked with The Cementation Group of Companies, in particular Cementation Chemicals and Cementation Research , reaching the position of Director of the latter.

Towards the end of his career with Cementation Research he was appointed Visiting Industrial Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Dundee and a co-founder of the very successful Concrete Technology Unit at Dundee.

In 1993 he was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree for his work concerning the durability of concrete.

In 1988 he joined the BBA as Director and in the 17 years he has managed the organisation it has grown in stature and moved from being a Non-Departmental Public Body to a private organisation, but significantly with a partnering arrangement with the now Office of the Deputy Prime Minister under a Memorandum of Understanding.

This corporate change allowed the BBA greater freedom to develop its activities.

At the start of the new millennium, Peter was dedicated to the view that BBA needed a quantum leap to move from its previous restricted position.

The Competent Persons Schemes have provided the means to achieve this and some two years ago, the BBA secured inspection work in support of the FENSA Scheme for replacement doors and windows.

This has rapidly grown to be a significant part of the business.

It has now been joined by another new area of activity - assessments for the ELECSA Competent Persons Scheme under Part P of the Building Regulations.

The BBA's core business has also prospered with increasing numbers of product assessments and the development of European Technical Approval Guidelines as part of the BBA's role as the spokesbody in the European Organisation for Technical Approvals (EOTA).

Peter has been President of EOTA twice, an unprecedented achievement, and has also been President of the European Union of Agrement (UEAtc) and a member of the World Federation of Technical Assessment Organisations (WFTAO).

He was awarded the Officers Cross of Merits by Poland for technical excellence and co-operation, underwriting the European Harmonisation and Membership process.

Outside of the BBA, Peter is a leading member of the Concrete Society where he is a Past-President and is Chairman of the Editorial Board of the Magazine of Concrete Research and the registration Scheme for Specialist Concrete-frame Contractors (SPECC).

He is also Past-President of the Research and Development Society.

It is testimony to his unstinting work as Chief Executive that the BBA's brand and business have never been stronger and he will retire after a highly successful career that has combined many academic, technical and managerial achievements.

Greg Cooper joins the BBA with many years experience in the international construction materials supply industry.

He is a trained chemist with a multi-disciplined career embracing product development, international marketing and board level general management.

His last executive board appointment was as Director Europe and Development for Fosroc International and prior to that, he held two Chief Executive positions for overseas subsidiaries of that company.

Early on in his career, Greg worked for Thomas Ness Limited - a company set up by the then National Coal Board to market coal-derived products.

It held a number of Agrement Certificates for damp- and water-proofing products, so Greg has had contact with the Agrement process from a long way back.

He brings to the BBA over 20 years' experience in technically-oriented business to business management at home and abroad, coupled with close involvement in innovative product development.

His most recent roles within Fosroc International involved board responsibility for Product/Technology Development and the company's European operations including units in Denmark, France, Ireland, Spain and the UK.

Prior to this he held Chief Executive positions for Fosroc's operations in New Zealand and The United Arab Emirates This experience and expertise places Greg in an unrivalled position to take the development of the BBA - already growing at a faster rate than at any time in its history - into what is an extremely promising future.

To facilitate a smooth transfer of responsibilities, Greg will join as Chief Executive Designate on 3rd May 2005, becoming Chief Executive on 3rd June 2005, following Peter's retirement. Request free introductory details about products from British Board of Agrement ...
