BBA runs Cavity Wall scheme

A British Board of Agrement product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team Jun 30, 2009

UK households benefit from funding of insulation improvements by energy retailers including injected cavity wall insulation and loft insulation.

The British Board of Agrement has run an Approved Installer scheme for injected Cavity Wall Insulation (CWI) for over 30 years and it is a mandatory requirement that any company installing CWI must be approved by the BBA.

The British Board of Agrement launched the new BBA Approved Installer scheme.

Energy retailers look to ensure contractors engaged in installing CWI are members of the BBA scheme.

Until today, there has been no BBA scheme for loft insulation, but that has now changed with the launch of a new BBA Approved Installer scheme in this sector.

It is a sad fact that there can be many problems associated with the installation of loft insulations...

Installations may not be complete, with areas uninsulated, or overinsulated; ventilation openings covered at the eaves; burst pipes caused by freezing problems if insulation goes under water supply pipework in a now much-colder loft.

Perhaps more significantly at the other end of the temperature scale, there are fire risks if power cables are covered by insulating material.

Given that recipients of utility-funded installations are often elderly people, it is hardly surprising that it is difficult for these householders to check that they have had a safe and competent installation.

The new BBA scheme has been developed with input from industry stakeholders and will help ensure that these problems are resolved and standards are raised.

Installers will have to demonstrate competence through BBA inspected in-progress and completed installations.

It is anticipated that installers keen to prove they are working to the highest standards and looking to gain an edge on their competitors will welcome the opportunity to become BBA Approved.

Details of the scope of the scheme and an Application Form are available from the homepage of the BBA website.
