British Woodworking Federation has experienced a surge of interest in its BWF-CERTIFIRE Fire Door and Doorset Scheme.

Fire safety is becoming ever more important and the British Woodworking Federation has experienced a surge of interest in its BWF-CERTIFIRE Fire Door and Doorset Scheme The bwfgaptester is the most effective way of ensuring that the gap between the fire door leaf and the frame is correct

This gap must be wide enough to allow the door to operate correctly, whilst not being too wide for the action of the intumescent seal to be effective when subject to a fire.

In general, the gap should not exceed 3mm - this optimum gap means that in a fire the intumescent material will foam, thus sealing the gap.

By using the bwfgaptester, which is a small pocket-sized card, it is simple to confirm the gap between the fire door leaf and the frame are correct, as the card itself is exactly 3mm thick.

One side of the bwfgaptester is a mirror, making it easy to check that the top edge of the door has the BWF-CERTIFIRE Fire Door and Doorset scheme label.

All fire doors manufactured under the Scheme carry a fully traceable label which gives peace of mind that it is a fire door that has been tested to work in a fire.

The BWF has distributed over 40,000 bwfgaptesters to architects, building control officers and those involved in the building industry.

Demand for the bwfgaptester has increased since the launch of the BWF Compatibility Campaign which spotlights the importance of using compatible components when installing fire doors.

To be effective a fire door must be regarded as a complete assembly - door, door frame and hardware - in which all the pieces are compatible and fit together like a jigsaw.

The easiest way to achieve this is by obtaining a complete doorset already made up as this will have been tested and certified as an integral unit.

The high demand for the bwfgaptester demonstrates the success of the BWF-CERTIFIRE Fire Door and Doorset Scheme Compatibility Campaign and the need to produce simple but effective methods of helping to ensure fire safety.

The bwfgaptester is available free of charge from the BWF.
