Leading access doors and vents manufacturer Bilco has completed delivery of 11 smoke ventilators for the Royal Hall in Harrogate.

The Royal Hall is England's last surviving kursaal (the entertainment hall at a spa or seaside resort) Over the past one hundred years, the magnificent building has had many different roles

The versatility of the theatre building has enabled the Royal Hall to be used for a range of purposes - from a cinema to a boxing arena, from an exhibition hall to a dance hall; from ballet to theatre performances, from school speech days to concert hall.

A major refurbishment project has taken place following the closure of the hall in 2002 on safety grounds.

The refurbishment will give the hall a new lease of life and will meet all safety standards, including fire safety.

The Royal Hall was officially re-opened on 22 January 2008 by HRH the Prince of Wales.

Bilco supplied main contractors HBG with 11 SS-50 REM aluminium vertical smoke vents, measuring 610 x 1830 mm, which were adapted to fit false louvres and positioned high above the stage area.

The vents were specially made to fit the non-standard openings and they each utilise two 24 volt DC cylindrical piston actuators for positive, controlled operation to ensure rapid dispersal of smoke and noxious fumes.

The smoke vents have been wired directly into the building's management system by MandE contractor Westminster Controls, allowing for automatic opening in the event of a fire.

Faye Davies, project architect at Burrell Foley Fischer, said: "This project required the smoke vents to be of an unusual size and design, so that false louvres could be fitted, this enabled us to achieve the right aesthetics and to secure Listed Building Consent".

"Bilco's easily adaptable vents made this possible for us." Simon Shand-Brown, sales and marketing manager for Bilco, said: "Bilco specialises in working with our clients to provide them with products that meet their needs".

"We are pleased that we were able to meet all the requirements for smoke ventilators at Royal Hall." The installation of smoke vents reflects the growing attention being paid to this aspect of building design and safety by architects, building owners and regulatory authorities such as local council planning departments.

In addition to smoke vents, Bilco manufactures a range of pit and floor doors.

Models include drainage doors, non-drainage doors, doors designed to receive flooring materials, doors for interior building applications, fire rated floor doors and a series of special application doors.
