Bilco allow easy access to school boilers
Floor doors from Bilco UK allow access to the low carbon biomass boiler at St Mary Magdalene Roman Catholic School in North London.
Special design features include a rooftop multi-use games area and a semi-basement lecture theatre, at the school in Willesden Green.
Both features were created to make best use of available space on what is a restricted site.
The school, which forms part of the City Academy programme, is a co-educational facility with places for 1,400 pupils from early years through to sixth form.
The building has been designed to comply with the Greater London Authority's 10% renewable energy policy, so environmental factors have been a major consideration in its construction.
In addition to the use of biomass boilers, photovoltaic cells and highly sustainable cladding and curtain walling, the new school is naturally ventilated to ensure a minimum carbon footprint.
The project forms part of the Schools City Academy programme with the London Diocesan Board as the Project Sponsor and the London Borough of Islington commission the Early Years Nursery component.
Leading access doors and vents manufacturer Bilco's floor doors make life easier for maintenance personnel who need to gain access to underfloor services - in this case the biomass boiler where the doors are used to load the fuel pellets into the hopper.
According to James Fisher, general manager at Bilco: "The project has successfully reached the end of the funding and procurement phase and is currently under construction with Phase 1 and Phase 2 already completed.
A key distinguishing characteristic of the Bilco floor door is the smooth, easy and controlled way it operates".
"Each unit is engineered with lift assistance for smooth, easy one person operation, regardless of size".
"This is essential to ensure that the delivery vehicles are turned around as quickly as possible".
Two floor doors have been supplied to St Mary Magdalene School - one type JD-AL H20, suitable for vehicular traffic, and one JD-AL for pedestrian use.
Both are constructed of 6mm diamond pattern plate.
Features that come as standard on Bilco floor doors include a positive hold open arm that engages automatically when the door leaf is fully open, heavy duty hinges and a stainless steel slam lock with removable top-side handle.
Both the doors specified for St Mary Magdalene also feature anti-corrosion hardware to ensure many years of trouble free, dependable service.
Standard and special sizes are offered to suit any requirement.
