Birchall wins GBP1m Games stadium contract

Edinburgh office of UK-wide building services provider Birchall has won a GBP1million contract to fit-out a 5,000-seater sports stadium in Glasgow for the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

The company, which also has offices in London and Newcastle-under-Lyme, has started work on Glasgow Council's Scotstoun Stadium and Sports Centre, which is receiving a GBP14-million upgrade to host the rugby and track and field events.

Birchall has been commissioned by Glasgow City Council in conjunction with EIC Scotland and Barr Construction to provide all the mechanical services that will enable athletes and rugby players from 'grass roots' level to top international competitors to enjoy the perfect environment for performance and relaxation.

Birchall is installing heating systems, domestic water services, automatic controls and ventilation for two new stands, which are scheduled for completion in Summer 2009.

Its specialist air conditioning company Birchall Air is also fitting VRV (variable refrigerant volume) systems for the stands, which are being built on an existing site that already has an indoor sports centre, swimming pool and leisure facilities.

The new all-seater Main Stand will have full changing, hospitality and office facilities, including a media centre, over three floors, as well as an indoor athletics, training and warm-up track and conditioning facilities on the ground floor.

The smaller North Stand, which will have seats, toilet and food kiosks, will bring the total seating capacity of the stadium to 5,000 spectators.

Darren Barlow, Birchall's newly appointed Scotland Regional Manager, said: "The stadium is aimed not just at world-class athletes but also at 'grass roots' level, with up to one million people a year already using its existing sporting facilities".
