Secured By Design award for Birchdale Glass

Birchdale Glass awarded a prestigious Secured by Design (SBD) accreditation for its aluminium communal heavy-duty entrance door with electromechanical locking system, the first of its type in the UK.

Secured By Design, is the official UK police flagship initiative supporting the principles of 'designing out crime' by focusing on crime prevention at the design and construction stages of new and refurbished residential and commercial properties, promoting the use of security standards for a wide range of products.

Birchdale's aluminium commercial entrance doors have two electromechanical locks and are tested by BSI to PAS 23 and PAS 24 (weather and security tests).

Unlike traditional locks, the electromechanical locks used on Birchdale doors are concealed within the door frame meaning they can be used on an open-in or open-out door, and are not susceptible to vandalism.

Tests over one million cycles have proved that they can take a lot of abuse and still operate effectively.

They can be linked up to any number of entry systems or automatic gearing allowing the door to be used in any high use entry situation.

Birchdale's Managing Director Michael Deanus said: "We're very proud to have achieved Secured By Design for our commercial doors because it reflects so well on the quality of the product".

"There are steel and timber doors on the market that have similar accreditation and aluminium doors with an SBD accreditation but none with an electromechanical locking system".

"This will give our customers additional confidence in the product and as many housing associations and local authorities require Secured By Design accreditation as a minimum standard, it gives us the competitive edge in many markets, especially in the public sector".
