Andrew Penny, Service Engineer with Dairy Electrical Refrigeration, won the Bitzer UK sponsored Commercial Engineer Award at the Institute of Refrigeration Awards.

The mark of a deserving award winner is a recipient who doesn't expect it That was certainly the case when Andrew Penny, a Service Engineer with Dairy Electrical Refrigeration in Shaftsbury Dorset, won the Bitzer UK sponsored Commercial Engineer Award at the Institute of Refrigeration Awards

Although Andrew has spent the past twenty years servicing and specifying refrigeration equipment for dairy use, he is a keen student and considers self development a key constituent in his work.

Having gained several qualifications at Bath College, Andrew was nominated in 2005 for a 'Student of the Year' award, which prompted some of his customers to write with their experiences of his diligent work.

"I always try to find the best solutions to a customer's needs," says Andrew, "Rather than telling them what they want".

"That means getting to know them and working with them and suppliers and taking time to get things right." This is echoed by the Award judges, who commented, "His clients have recommended him saying that nothing is too much trouble and his professional manner and knowledge of products is evident." Starting out in the motor trade, Andrew migrated into the agricultural business in and around Warminster, expecting to be working on tractors and farming equipment.

However, the dairy industry is much more about milking machines and storage and he quickly became interested in refrigeration and what it could achieve.

Having learned the trade, Andrew is now expanding horizons for his employer and has brought new business in cold rooms and beer cellars.

Andrew remains surprised by the attention the award has brought and has much gratitude for those he feels have made it possible.

"My lecturers at Bath College have been fantastic and my boss Michael has supported me for much of my working career." He continues, "I am particularly grateful to BITZER for sponsoring this award and the companies and people who make these events possible, it means a lot to me and people like me to be recognised".

Married with two sons, Andrew lives and works in and around Warminster, Wiltshire.
