Bus garage gets renewable glulam rafters from B K

B & K Structures has supplied curved glulam rafters and main structural steelwork for the West Ham Bus Garage in London.

The company was also responsible for the connection design, supply, delivery and installation on site.

A framework was required that could withstand high traffic levels, as well as demonstrating optimum eco-credentials.

The vast quantity of materials used on this project included 420 tonnes of steel, 172m3 of engineered spruce tapered, curved arches and 115m3 of engineered larch tapered arches.

Temporary stability during construction posed a challenge for B & K Structures and required approximately 25 tonnes of RMD Kwikform and associated steel bracketry, which could not be removed until the roof decking was complete.

B & K Structures had to ensure there was no disruption to the transport system as the temporary bus garage was also in operation on the adjacent site.

Before the construction programme began it was important that effective solutions were found to minimise the environmental impact of the garage and facilitate the sustainable increase of transport operations in the area.

Engineered glulam timber was chosen as it has the potential to regenerate and is therefore a renewable resource.

It is fully recyclable, waste efficient, biodegradable and non-toxic.
