Colombia's largest multi-utility standardizes on Bentley's WaterGEMS for water distribution.

Bentley Systems announced that Empresas Publicas de Medellin E.S.P.(EEPPM), Colombia's largest multi-utility company, has selected Bentley as its sole software provider for water distribution modeling solutions Headquartered in Medellin, Colombia, EEPPM will use Bentley's WaterGEMS to support a ten-year master plan to reduce water loss and improve the reliability of its water supply system

Serving more than 3 million people across ten different cities in the Aburra Valley, the system consists of more than 3,200 kilometers of pipe, 95 tanks, and 29 pump stations.

In order to quickly and accurately prioritize tasks for this major rehabilitation project, EEPPM needed to leverage its corporate geographic information system (GIS) and commercial information system within its water network model.

Accomplishing this would require a water distribution modeling solution capable of interoperating with all of its existing software.

"We evaluated several water resource solutions to ensure interoperability with our current software platforms, as well as smooth integration with our utility information systems," said Juan Carlos Herrera, water research and development team leader, EEPPM.

"After running a series of tests, we found the platform-independent environment of WaterGEMS to be the only software able to successfully support the workflow of our multidisciplinary team of engineers, CAD drafters, and GIS professionals".

WaterGEMS enables collaboration among users around a single model file, allowing them to build, edit, calculate, and map water distribution systems using their choice of GIS, CAD, and stand-alone environments.

Additionally, WaterGEMS modules - LoadBuilder, Darwin Calibrator, and Darwin Designer - will support EEPPM's calibration, rehabilitation, and optimization projects for the greatest cost savings.
