Bramall Construction awarded GBP5.5m contract to bring 551 properties in the Partington and Urmston area of Trafford, Manchester up to the government's Decent Homes standard.

The contract, awarded by Trafford Housing Trust through GM Procure, follows the success of Bramall's refurbishment of 587 properties for the Trust in Altrincham, Urmston, Stretford and Partington.

Bramall has been charged with replacing all kitchens and bathrooms, rewiring electrics, and installing central heating systems by March 2008.

Alison Hawkins, Project Officer at Trafford Housing Trust, said: "The GM Procure process is a new way of working for us and as with any new practice we knew initially it would be a learning curve".

"We have a strong relationship with everyone at Bramall and knew we could rely on them to work with us in partnership - past experience told us that they would be the perfect partner.

GM Procure is a not-for-profit regeneration company set up by a consortium of social housing providers (including Trafford Housing Trust) in the North West region.

A significant proportion of the expected GBP1.5 billion spend by members on the repair and upkeep of properties until 2010 will be channelled through GM Procure.

As well as opening up opportunities for SME businesses in the sub-region, volume cost savings will be used to invest in local jobs, community enterprise and support for micro businesses.
