Paul Scholes opens brand new primary school
The new school has been the focus of an 18-month build project by Bramall Construction on behalf of Manchester City Council.
Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes joined pupils and staff at Haveley Hey Primary School to kickstart a new beginning for the school in its brand new state-of-the-art building.
He joined the Lord Mayor of Manchester, Councillor Glyn Evans, to unveil a plaque marking the official opening and helped the school's 350 pupils to launch hundreds of balloons skywards in celebration of their new school.
The new school has been the focus of an 18-month build project by Bramall Construction on behalf of Manchester City Council.
The design is colourful and uplifting, and the new school has been built to a high specification, with innovative use of space.
The former premises next door have also been demolished to make way for an amphitheatre and new sports facilities including a football pitch and netball courts.
Prior to demolition, Bramall Construction carefully removed and relayed the school crest into the main entrance of the new building in an effort to preserve the spirit of the old school.
Speaking at the opening, Paul Scholes said: "The new school looks fantastic both inside and out and its freshness and sparkle is mirrored in the excitement and energy of all the children and teachers".
"Looking out across the school you can see the delight in all of their faces and I'm chuffed to have been invited to be part of their special day".
Lesley Maddock, Headteacher at Haveley Hey, commented: "I am proud and delighted to be the Head of this fantastic building filled with fabulous children, and want to thank staff, parents and governors for their continued hard work and support".
"This wonderful first class learning environment that we now have is already making a big difference in teaching and learning in school".
Bramall Construction's Project Manager, Bob Hanlon said: "We are very pleased to have been involved in this rewarding project and build a high quality, impressive school of which the children, staff and local community can be proud".
"I have no doubt Haveley Hey has a very promising future".
Councillor Sheila Newman, Manchester City Council's Executive Member for Children's Services, said: "We are committed to ensuring that all pupils are taught in modern state-of-the-art buildings and there is a massive programme of building work underway across the city to achieve this".
"I am certain that the new facilities at Haveley Hey Primary will do much to enhance both teaching and learning and will help to further drive up standards at the school".
Pupils at Haveley Hey Primary School moved into their new classrooms just before school finished for the summer.
