Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team Mar 14, 2008

Bramall Construction marks International Women's Day by launching groundbreaking 'Female Apprentice' initiative.

March 8th was International Women's day and two teenage girls from Blackburn laid the foundation stones of a great career in construction, supported by Bramall Construction and Hyndburn Homes.

Fifteen year old Rebecca Hannon and fourteen year old Sammi Jo Taylor both from St Bedes School in Blackburn are working towards a national BTEC qualification in Construction.

The girls have to complete fifty days of a Bramall work placement scheme which will also form part of their GCSE syllabus.

* Bramall Construction is currently working in the area in partnership with Hyndburn Homes, part of the Contour Housing Group.

Together, they are carrying out GBP2.7 million pounds of improvement works to over 300 properties in the neighbourhood, comprehensively lifting them above to the standard required by the Government's Decent Homes Initiative.

The girls will receive expert tuition and guidance from professionals at Bramall Construction, gaining practical skills in bricklaying, plastering joinery and tiling as well as training in other construction site duties.

They will also be offered mentoring support and career advice.

Rebecca, who is currently studying 8 GCSEs thinks the female apprentice scheme is a great opportunity, "I hadn't really thought about a career in construction before now but this kind of project is perfect because it gives you a real insight into the industry".

"International Women's Day is about teaching girls that they can do any job they want".

"I am quite a 'girly' girl and my friends were surprised when I told them what I was doing, now, they all want to register for the scheme".

Paul Hughes Area Director for Bramall Construction explains why the company is happy to support young female apprentices in this way, "At Bramalls we recognise the valuable contribution that women make to our industry, and we are very keen to invest in young talent".

"International Women's Day is becoming an increasingly important date in our calendar and it is wonderful to see these young girls so excited about what is, a great career choice".

"At Bramall Construction we will do all that we can to ensure that they get the very best training and skills available".

* International Women's Day (8 March) is an occasion marked by women's groups around the world.

This date is also commemorated at the United Nations and is designated in many countries as a national holiday.

On March 8th, women on all continents, come together to celebrate and reflect upon a tradition that represents at least nine decades of struggle for equality, justice, peace and development.
