Booth Industries ask 'How Safe Is Your Business?'
Burglary costs the nation more than GBP2.8 billion and Booth Industries argues much more could be done to protect businesses.
Building codes are already in place, designed to limit the spread of fire and ensure that occupants can reach a place of safety in a reasonable time.
This includes using measures such as internal linings in certain areas and using fire doors which can slow and limit the spread of fire.
According to Barry Gregson of Booth Commercial, a specialist fire door company, it is imperative to select and fit the right products, particularly when it comes to fire doors.
Barry said: "Getting the right door for the job in essential and it is worth investing in superior steel doors, particularly if robustness combined with fire protection is needed.
"The fact is many architects and project managers tend to favour timber fire doors over steel because of the lower cost of wood.
I don't disagree with this if the door is being used for shorter resistance periods and light people traffic areas.
However if the door is being used in the likes of a school or hospital for example and the requirement is for 60 minutes resistance or more, I would recommend steel over wood.
The cost differences are lower the higher the rating, but in terms of robustness and maintainability they are leagues apart".
He added: "Typically 90 and 120 minute steel and timber fire doors are in direct competition and the lower price of steel doors is making them a more popular choice.
Five years ago the market for steel doors was relatively immature but since then has shown significant growth, a trend which is forecast to continue".
Booth Commercial supplies pre-engineered steel doors for industrial and commercial applications.
The company is the commercial arm of Booth Industries a specialist steel door manufacturer which has worked on security, blast, and fire doors in high profile projects like the Channel Tunnel Rail Link and St Pancras International Station.
