Brockhouse Modernfold has won the coveted 2005 AIS Contractors Gold Award for its acoustic operable wall installation at The Sage Gateshead The judges were "impressed by the high-quality construction and workmanship of this movable wall"

The semi-circular formation of reversible panels forms the stage back-drop.

Panels are fitted with 1,000m of ash batons, one side veneered and the reverse fitted with fabric for absorption.

Architect, Foster and Partners, also received an award.

The award was presented at the Association of Interior Specialists' awards lunch at The Dorchester, attended by over 430 guests.

The AIS Contractors Awards are presented annually to promote and encourage high levels of craftsmanship.

The movable wall installation at The Sage in Gateshead was acclaimed in the media as 'an auditoria of acoustic excellence'.

The Sage itself has taken ten years of detailed planning and has been designed after extensive consultation with musicians, music presenters and promoters.

Brockhouse were excited to rise to the challenge of designing, manufacturing and installing what Arup stated as 'one of the most advanced movable walls ever to be installed in the UK'.

The partition is positioned on the stage to form a backdrop, however there were a number of obstacles in the design that a standard movable wall could not deal with.

To ensure that the aesthetic apppeal was not compromised at the expense of acoustic performance Brockhouse employed a unique reversible finish of soft Hessian sound absorption board with a veneered hardwood finish to the other side.

The Brockhouse Research and Development Unit designed a one off edge profile using a ball and socket joint which not only allowed the panels to be reversed but also complimented some twenty three acute angles within the headtrack to enable the wall to form a semi-circle.
