'Building Schools for the Future' is a national initiative designed to lift educational attainment by improving England's secondary school buildings and facilities The Government is providing funding from 2005-06, to make sure that every secondary school in England has 21st century facilities within 10 to 15 years

£2.2 billion was been provided for the first year of this programme, part of an estimated £15 billion projected annual spend in the sector as a whole [source OPDM].

Private Finance Initiative (PFI) history was made by Newham and Enfield Councils when Equion plc, working in partnership with Wates Construction, were chosen as the preferred bidder for a PFI deal in the first joint LEA PFI scheme in the country.

Part of the package provided a completely refurbished secondary school in Newham built on the site of the old Woodside School.

The newly named Cumberland School is now a specialist Sports College offering state-of-the-art teaching and learning facilities. The school wad designed, constructed and fitted out under the PFI scheme plus the facilities will be managed for the next 25 years.

Movable walls play increasing role in basic school design.

Acoustic movable walls play an increasing role in schools and are being built into the basic designs of many of the new generation of PFI funded schools.

When asked about the impact of movable walls at the new school in Newham, the staff reported that "they are particularly useful for exam times when different size rooms are required".

"The movable walls give us choice on the size of room and the high acoustic rating comes into its own".

"The systems are easy to move and we appreciate the space flexibility".

Other schools can separate large sports halls to enable simultaneous events to be staged or space to be tailored for assemblies.

Brockhouse Modernfold specialist movable walls for PFI projects.

The movable walls at Newham were provided by PFI specialists Brockhouse Modernfold.

There are a number of reasons why Brockhouse Modernfold have achieved such a high reputation as a specialist supplier of movable walls and folding, sliding partitions for PFI projects.

Reassuringly, Brockhouse have been producing movable walls for over 50 years and have their own UK based manufacturing facility.

This has helped them successfully complete contracts for over 30 major PFI initiatives.

The quality of their products has always been ahead of most competitors, with heavy duty mechanisms ensuring long term quality performance.

This has proved increasingly significant as clients, quite rightly, now consider the complete product life cycle when assessing value.

Architects have learnt that the cheapest quotation has so often been the poorest value.

Brockhouse develop PFI warranties and service agreements.

Brockhouse have developed particular extended PFI warranties and service agreements, which with their UK manufacturing experience, can be delivered.

Brockhouse also have testing and certification for all their products.

Many competitors are importing poorer quality walls and compound problems with poor service.

In the long term they prove to be anything but the cheapest.

Brockhouse are now pioneering partnering agreements, sharing their experience with the contractor, even providing technical support in the PFI bidding stage.

Contractors appreciate the benefits to them of continuity and choose Brockhouse again, not least because of their input in terms of value engineering, ensuring that a project is completed profitably.

Architects also appreciate the experience of Brockhouse technical staff who are keen to assist on new and innovative designs and ideas as well as helping with all standard requirements and drawings.

On the Newham project, for instance, Brockhouse provided structural engineers with technical information to assist with the design of the structure, and expert advice on acoustic loadings and help specifying extra steelwork to support the stacking.

Making PFI's successful and profitable.

Neil O'Halleran, Marketing Director at Brockhouse, emphasised that "the key is continuity: contractor and supplier working together to make a project successful and profitable".

"At Brockhouse we value the long term relationships that bring repeat work and where we can add value out of our experience".

In a bid to raise industry standards, Brockhouse Modernfold have produced a handy 20 point quality check list to help architects and contractors ask the right questions when specifying or purchasing a quality movable wall.

This is available on request.
