To help designers and specifiers get to grips with the changes, BRE is holding a Briefing in October.

Major revisions to Part L are due to come into effect early next year To help designers and specifiers get to grips with the changes, BRE is holding a Briefing on 18th October 2005 at its Watford site

The revisions are in response to the Government's Energy White Paper, which sets out ways of significantly cutting the UK's CO2 emissions, and the EU's Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD).

The EPBD requires calculating the energy performance of buildings in accordance with a national standard.

The whole approach to conforming to Part L will be different after the changes come into effect.

The Briefing will summarise the key requirements of Part L and the EPBD, then tackle the design issues relating to insulation, airtightness, heating, lighting and plant inspection.

There will also be a demonstration of SBEM* - a software package that simplifies the job of the national calculation methodology, demonstrates a building's compliance with minimum energy performance standards, and works out its EPBD asset rating.

This rating shows how much energy the building uses under standardised design conditions, and will have to be made available to prospective purchasers and tenants.

Attending the Part L Briefing costs GBP250 plus VAT.

Places can be booked by calling BRE Events on 01923 664532 or e-mail events@bre.co.uk.

* SBEM (Simplified Building Energy Method) was commissioned by ODPM and developed by BRE.
