BRE Certification has formed a Sustainability Board to provide independent governance of BRE's sustainability tools, methodologies and standards.

BRE Certification has formed a Sustainability Board to provide independent governance of BRE's sustainability tools, methodologies and standards, including BREEAM, Environmental Profiles and the Green Guides The Board represents a wide cross section of stakeholders from the construction industry, including designers, developers, end users, financiers, insurers and regulators

The first meeting took place on 18th October 2005 and a second meeting is planned for December.

Bill Gething of Feilden Clegg Bradley Architects and Chair of the RIBA Sustainability Board comments: "This is a great initiative.

The tools and methodologies developed by BRE over the past 12 or so years have become industry standards upon which construction professionals depend.

Being able to work alongside their sustainability experts to steer future developments will be very beneficial and result in the continuing development of tools that are directly aligned to industry needs".

The Board will provide strategic and tactical input on the needs for new publications, standards and certification schemes, and revisions to existing schemes including BREEAM, Envest and Environmental profiling of building materials.

"With sustainability becoming a growing part of the national agenda, we felt that it was the right time to give a broader stakeholder ownership of our environmental tools and assessment schemes", says Carol Atkinson, Managing Director of BRE Certification .

"Good Construction plays a major role in improving the quality of life.

The new Board signals an important move forward in our drive to help the industry get to grips with the complex issue of sustainability".
