BREEAM, BRE's Environmental Assessment Method for buildings, has been awarded ISO 9001:2000 accreditation.

BREEAM, BRE's Environmental Assessment Method for buildings, has been awarded ISO 9001:2000 accreditation This new version of the ISO quality standard places greater emphasis on having measurable quality objectives within an organisation's quality system

It examines the extent to which that system contains customer-focused elements, including understanding needs, meeting requirements, keeping customers informed and measuring satisfaction.

"We felt that ISO 9001 was a natural progression," says Alan Yates, Technical Director of BREEAM.

"We wanted to demonstrate that our systems and procedures are rigorous, complete and transparent.

With the growth of the BREEAM and EcoHomes schemes, we found that we were increasingly being questioned on these issues.

The accreditation process has helped us to tighten procedures.

It covers all of our operations relating to assessor training, licensing, quality management, assessment recording and record keeping.

BRE is currently extending the ISO scope to include the assessment and certification of construction materials through BRE's Environmental Profiles scheme, and aims to achieve this within the next few months".
