Steel pipes and pipe fittings from Birmingham-based Barnard are helping Laing O'Rourke in its work to bring the Slough Sewage Treatment Works in line with new outfall consents, effective end of 2005.

As part of the Trident North Alliance with Thames Water, Laing O'Rourke commenced construction on the £16M project in April 03, and have since used a multitude of different fittings from Barnard, who specialise in fabricating steel pipes into almost any shape, size or diameter for the water industry Coated and tested in-house with Scotchcote 206N, DWI 25(1) (a)-approved fusion-bonded epoxy coating, each Barnard pipe also complies with the tough WIS 4:52:01 Water Industry Standard for anti-corrosion coatings

Items that have been supplied to the project include bellmouths, puddle pipes and the 1200mm diameter inverted syphon inlet feed that incorporates a magflow bypass facility.

During the project Barnard have worked closely with Laing O'Rourke to develop cost effective solutions to meet the client's specification whilst considering installation methods and the commissioning requirements.

The project scope includes the construction of a new inlet works and high level preliminary treatment plant, with fine screening plant, screenings conditioning and handling plant, storm overflow and grit removal and handling plant.

Also provided will be two new 29m diameter Primary Settlement Tanks (giving four in total), two new activated sludge tanks (giving six in total) and two new 35m diameter Final Settlement Tanks (giving six in total).

When complete, effluent at Slough will be discharged, via a new outfall pipeline, into the Round Moor Ditch, a tributary of the Thames.

The project is due to come on-line at the end of 2004.
