BSI has just published a revision of BS 5871 Specification for the installation and maintenance of gas fire appliances

If you are responsible for fitting gas fires, boilers and appliances you'll be interested to hear that BSI has just published a revision of BS 5871 Specification for the installation and maintenance of gas fires, convector heaters, fire/back boilers and decorative fuel effect gas appliances, comprising: Part 1 Gas fires, convector heaters, fire/back boilers and heating stoves (2nd and 3rd family gases) BS 5871-1:2005 supersedes BS 5871-1:2001 which is largely withdrawn Price GBP 128*, GBP 64 BSI Subscribing Members Part 2 Inset live fuel effect gas fires of heat input not exceeding 15 kW, and fire/back boilers (2nd and 3rd family gases) BS 5871-2:2005 supersedes BS 5871-2:2001 which is withdrawn

Price GBP 128*,GBP 64 BSI Subscribing Members Part 3 Decorative fuel effect gas appliances of heat input not exceeding 20 kW (2nd and 3rd family gases) BS 5871-3:2005 supersedes BS 5871-3:2001 which is withdrawn.

Price GBP 120*, GBP 60 BSI Subscribing Members.

These specify a series of instructions for the installation (including design, inspection, commissioning and maintenance) of various types of gas fires, convector heaters, fire/back boilers and decorative fuel effect gas appliances for the purpose of heating rooms or spaces in domestic or commercial premises.

The instructions are addressed to competent (i.e, Corgi-registered) persons undertaking such installations, and cover the selection of a suitable appliance, flueing and ventilation, and other measures necessary to ensure a safe installation.

Complying with these standards results in a correctly designed, installed, inspected, commissioned and maintained installation incorporating appropriate ventilation and flueing that meets best practice, satisfies statutory requirements, and ensures a safe installation.
