Kitemark points the way to better flood
protection
Choosing flood protection products made easier if home owners or builders look for the Kitemark symbol on flood protection products.
This is of particular relevance as river levels look set to rise following January's heavy downpours and certain parts of the UK prepare themselves for a potential repeat of the 2007 floods Applicable to products such as flood boards, free-standing barriers and door seals, the BSI scheme means that purchasers need do no more than look for the familiar Kitemark - a recognised mark of quality since 1903 - to be sure that the items they buy have been rigorously tested and that they are fit for purpose when installed and used correctly

The British Standards Institution has just published PD 6692 Asphalt - Guidance on the use of BS EN 12697 bituminous mixtures.
"Given the unpredictable and often adverse weather conditions we've experienced over recent years and particularly in the last few months, it's no surprise that consumer interest in flood protection is at an all time high," said Claire Lynam, Head of Marketing Communications at BSI Product Services.
"With a vast range of protection products on the market, it can be exceedingly difficult for consumers to make informed choices about quality and performance".
"That's why we believe that this scheme provides consumers, for the first time, with clear and effective guidance in selecting products that will reliably meet their needs".
In response to the increase in claims resulting from the recent flooding in the UK, many insurance companies are now starting to offer flood cover based on the actual level of risk.
This means that the companies will want to know what local flood protection measures have been put in place, and will take into account effective actions taken to protect homes and businesses.
Appropriate actions may include the use of flood products bearing the Kitemark, where these reduce the flood risk affecting the properties.
In order to gain a licence to apply the Kitemark to their goods, suppliers of flood protection products have to demonstrate that those products comply fully with all relevant Product Approval Specification which includes full factory production control requirements.
In addition, BSI Product Services regularly audits Kitemark licence holders to ensure that they are continuing to meet all of the requirements of the licensing scheme.
Users of products bearing the Kitemark can, therefore, have total confidence in their purchases.
