Top safety award to new railway for London 2012

British Safety Council present the Olympic Delivery Authority and contractors Balfour Beatty with a Five Star Audit, a world class certificate for safety.

The award was given to the ODA and contractors Balfour Beatty in recognition of the excellent safety standards employed in the development of the 12 track railway sidings at Orient Way to the north of Stratford.

Speaking at an event to celebrate the completion of the project, Chief Executive of the BSC, Brian Nimick, said: "The ODA and Balfour Beatty have shown on this project that having an excellent health and safety record enables high standards of work rather than inhibiting them; it facilitates delivery on time and to budget rather than detracting from it; and that it contributes to good industrial relations rather than damaging them".

"In all ways putting safety first not only demonstrates a true feeling of caring, encouraging employees to work harder and remain loyal but importantly it also makes good business sense".

Receiving a Five Star Audit is evidence that a company has understood the value and advantage to be gained by taking a rigorous, methodical and managed attitude to health and safety issues.

It shows that inspection, auditing and training has been integrated into the day to day philosophy of the business.

Mr Nimick continued: "The BSC places great emphasis on our partnership with the ODA and our mutual aim to turn these into the safest games ever".

"To this end, the BSC is contributing over GBP2 million to provide accredited health and safety training for all the 2012 volunteers - that's up to 20,000 people who will be able to take a nationally recognised qualification, paid by us.
