Building Essential Skills is offering free training for construction companies in the East of England.

Building Essential Skills, a project resulting from a collaboration between the Learning and Skills Council and the European Social Fund, is working with employers in the building industry to help improve the reading, writing and communication skills of its workforce by offering free training to 50 companies The training is tailored to meet the needs of each company and its employees

In order to be eligible the construction company must provide a venue and some of its workforce as delegates, suggest a work-related topic which can be used as a basis for the training and be based in one of the six areas in the East of England: Bedfordshire and Luton, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, Hertfordshire and Essex.

In return Building Essential Skills will arrange appropriate delivery methods, organise a training provider and ensure the company gets maximum benefit from the programme.

Barry Mason, manager of the Building Essential Skills project explained "It is vital for individuals in the construction industry to have a good level of basic skills in order to do their jobs properly and often people with the skills need to brush-up on their existing knowledge".

"It could be using percentages, calculating complex areas and volumes or writing a formal letter, all of these skills will reflect on the company and may even cost the company in materials or money if these basic elements are not done correctly".

Building Essential Skills is dedicated to providing the help necessary in order for construction industry staff to perform basic skills in a competent and confident manner.

Linda Hockey, executive director at the Learning and Skills Council said: "With the increase in demand for housing and large construction projects over the coming years, I am sure that employers in the construction industry will benefit from a more skilled workforce, and individual staff will be able to increase their job satisfaction and prospects by updating their skills".
