Natural slate roofing supplied by Burlington plays significant role in restoration of one of Dundee's oldest schools - the Morgan Academy.

Natural slate roofing supplied by the UK's leading producer, Cumbria-based Burlington, has played a significant role in the restoration of one of Dundee's oldest schools - the Morgan Academy.

Having been gutted by fire in 2001, the 19th century Gothic building has been painstakingly restored to its former glory, Burlington's Blue/Grey slate being specified to match the building's original roof covering.

In total, some 1000m2 of Burlington Blue/Grey 26" - 9" random roofing slates not only feature on the secondary school's main roof areas but adorn a central tower and numerous turrets that are reminiscent of its Gothic-style architecture.

With the renovation programme being coordinated by Dundee City Council's Architectural Services Division and Simpson and Brown Architects of Edinburgh, the new Burlington roof finish was installed by specialist roofing contractors, Forster Roofing Services of Brechin.

With the refurbishment centring on the restoration of many of the building's original historic features, Burlington has faithfully reproduced slates with scalloped edges that feature predominantly on the turrets and the central tower for which the Morgan Academy is famed.

Today, the school - which now features a modern internal layout for improved access and circulation - is home to some 900 pupils aged between 11 and 18.

Originally named the Morgan Hospital by its founder, John Morgan who aimed to create Dundee's version of Edinburgh's George Heriot's Hospital, the building was acquired by the school board in 1889 and renamed Morgan Academy.

In addition to being available in both Blue/Grey and Westmorland Green, Burlington's natural slate roofing is available as random, patterned and sized product.

Random slates have random lengths and widths; patterned slates are of fixed length and width dimensions (width never being less than half the length) and sized slates have a fixed length but vary in width.
