BMF members race to Members Day

The Builders Merchants Federation (BMF) is encouraging busy merchants to go on-line for product training.
BMF negotiates credit reference service
Builders Merchants Federation (BMF) has joined forces with ACS Credit Services to provide a solution that will take the risk out of credit provision.
One of the highlights was a keynote speech by Roger Humber, Strategic Policy Advisor for the House Builders Association.
Mr Humber reviewed market prospects in the house-building sector, informing members about Government policy using five key agendas such as planning reform and climate change.
He examined and illustrated the damaging effects that these conflicting agendas have on house-building output, despite Government intentions to secure higher output.
Two new flagship services were officially launched - BMF EmploymentFirst, designed to ensure employment policies and procedures are correct and kept up to date, and the BMF Diploma in Merchanting, which is set to become the recognised qualification for management of builders' merchants.
Members were also given a sneak preview of what's in store for 2007, including waste and security initiatives.
The rest of the day offered delegates an opportunity to find out about products and topical business issues.
A supplier exhibition showcased a wide range of products and services such as landscaping, drainage systems, tools, security systems, heating and plumbing and insulation.
Throughout the afternoon delegates attended workshops on issues that affect their business.
Each presentation was followed by audience discussions, giving members the opportunity to ask questions and exchange useful advice.
John Makin, security manager at Bradfords Building Supplies gave some insights into security issues and best practice, to help members address the hidden problem of theft, both from customers and staff.
Kevin Cubbage, BMF Chairman told members how they can reduce the cost of credit notes and improve efficiency, while Fergal Dowling of Irwin Mitchell Solicitors explained the recent changes to employment law and the introduction of new age discrimination laws, which came into effect in October.
Jullian Ballinger, Managing Director of Builders Supply Stores (Coventry) thought that BMF Members' Day was one of the best events he has attended.
He said: "The BMF has really listened to its members and finally delivered a members' day that focuses on real issues for builders merchants".
"The workshops were informative and the keynote speaker was excellent, giving a very interesting insight into the house building market".
There was also an HGV and crane demonstration thanks to UGS , which provided members with a demonstration of the latest specification DAF 18 ton dropside HGV featuring current safety fittings, a digital tachograph and remote control Atlas crane.
