Builders Merchants Federation join forces with Health and Safety Executive to develop its latest Selling Guide on masonry blocks.

BMF issues specialist product advice jointly sponsored by HSE Each year in the construction industry 56,000 workers suffer from musculoskeletal injuries, most of which are back pain from handling heavy items

To raise awareness and reduce unnecessary accidents in the workplace The Builders Merchants Federation (BMF) has taken action and joined forces with Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to develop its latest Selling Guide on masonry blocks.

The Guide, which is jointly sponsored by HSE, is designed to help BMF members increase their product knowledge of masonry blocks and offers advice on how both merchants and their customers can handle them safely.

It details the risks associated with manual handling, correct procedures to follow when handling heavy blocks, and employers' duties under the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992.

The Guide also refers members to the HSE's Manual Handling Assessment Charts (MAC), which are designed to help understand, interpret and categorise the level of risk associated with manual handling activities.

The MAC incorporate a numerical and a colour coding score system to highlight high risk manual handling tasks.

Nick Patience, HSE's lead on Construction Supply Chain Projects said: "For merchants to offer an all round service to customers it is important for them to point out the risks involved in lifting heavy objects".

"We are pleased to jointly sponsor this BMF Selling Guide and help merchants take appropriate measures to reduce these risks to both themselves and their customers." Carole Green, Manager - BMF product support, said: "As always, our latest Guide is written by industry professionals and designed to provide clear, concise and up to date information, to help members advise customers and supply the correct products for each installation." In addition to health and safety advice the Guide gives an overview to the different types of masonry blocks and the applications they are used for.

BMF members can access further information and download copies of the latest Selling Guides on the members section of the BMF website.
