BMF launch Security First, a subscription service that identifies security issues whether personnel, systems or premises related and provides appropriate solutions.

UK builders merchants lose a staggering GBP112 million a year from stock theft and are now facing a potential new threat to their business from high tech crime To help merchants reduce their risk, BMF has launched Security First, a subscription service that identifies security issues whether personnel, systems or premises related and provides the appropriate solutions

Neither stock shrinkage nor high tech crime is a problem peculiar to builders merchants.

Across UK retail and wholesale generally, employees cost their bosses an average of GBP2,000 a year through theft and inefficient stock control.

Case evidence shows that most employee corruption is found among long-term, trusted staff who have been stealing for some time.

Collusion between employees and customers can result in further fraud and theft.

BMF's Security First service has been designed to prevent such situations.

Following the same format as BMF's successful Safety First and new Transport First packages, BMF Security First is an annual subscription service offered exclusively to BMF members that will identify any security issues and failings in all aspects of a company's operations from cash handling through staff procedures to physical site and perimeter control and will advise you how to remedy identified shortcomings.

Said BMF secretary, Peter Matthews: "It's often easier for an outsider to identify security weak points than it is for the internal management team who are, in many respects, too familiar with their operation".

"Having identified vulnerable areas, our expert advisors continue to work with the merchant to put in place remedying systems, and to identify optional service requirements to overcome specific problems".

The service provides builders merchants with support and training through onsite visits, a telephone helpline and in the form of a detailed manual and quarterly newsletters.

Also, a number of optional services are available within Security First, including IT Security and Electronic Counter Measures.

This option will offer specialist advice on technical audits and disaster planning, with full technical back-up provided by qualified specialists.
