Over 20,000 people do it every year accounting for one in eight of new homes built - more than the UK's largest commercial house builder.
* Forget ostentatious luxury.
Jacuzzis (14%) and home gyms (13%) fall short on the wish list, with Eco products - wind turbines and solar panels (42%) topping the hot list for people interested in building their own homes.
* 44% blame cost as the main reason stopping them from building their own home.
However on average, building your own home can result in an instant profit of around 30% and self built properties are VAT exempt which helps keep the cost down.
* 26% say they wouldn't know where to start or don't have the skills to build their own home.
No problem, the National Self Build and Restoration Centre is the perfect place to start learning.
* 39% of the population are motivated to build their own home because they want to put their specific design ideas into practice.
Fewer, 34% are influenced by property programmes, whilst 21% felt commercial developers simply didn't give them what they wanted.
* A dream home is close to home.
85% wouldn't leave the UK and the majority wouldn't leave the area they already live in (80% of Scots would stay in Scotland, 54% of Welsh would stick to Wales 54% and 59% of those in the North West would stay local.) * The most important room is the living room (44%) followed closely by kitchen (36%).
* 66% would build a detached home, 20% a bungalow with 6% picking a country cottage.
* Although the planners tend to dictate the trend for building period homes, the dream home has a modern appearance according to 42% of the population.
* 47% of people are interested in buying and restoring a property wreck.
A farmhouse would be top of their list (29%).
