Castle Cement is to boost its service to Scottish customers by opening a new distribution facility in Bellshill, North Lanarkshire.

Castle Cement is to boost its service to Scottish customers by opening a new distribution facility in Bellshill, North Lanarkshire.

It will replace the existing facility at Coatbridge, also in North Lanarkshire.

The company has signed an agreement to lease land within the Peter Stirling Limited Moss End railhead redistribution centre where they will build three 1,100 tonne capacity silos for cement storage.

These are expected to be in operation by November this year.

There will also be a despatch office and a room for the use of the company's delivery drivers.

Initially cement will be delivered overnight by lorry from the company's Ribblesdale manufacturing plant in Lancashire.

It is possible that eventually these deliveries will be made by rail.

From Bellshill the cement will then be delivered exclusively to customers throughout Scotland in one of Castle's own fleet of delivery tankers.

The company anticipates providing employment for around 25 people at the new facility, including most of the staff at the existing Coatbridge centre.

Castle Cement satisfies 25 per cent of the UK's demand for cement and operates from three works, in Lancashire, Rutland and in north Wales.

Its head office is in Birmingham.

"Our new distribution centre is specifically for Scottish customers and we will not be making any deliveries South of the border," said Castle's special projects manager Bill Thomson.

"It demonstrates our ongoing commitment to providing Scottish customers with the best possible service.".
