Over the sea from Skye - Calor delivers

A Calor Gas product story

The remote location of the Glenelg Inn means that only Calor can provide such reliability

Imagine running a high quality leisure business in one of the UK's most remote locations.

To lose heating and catering facilities would be unthinkable - and that's where Calor's unrivalled supply network is trusted to deliver.

The Glenelg Inn is situated on the shores of Glenelg Bay, opposite the Isle of Skye on the West coast of Scotland.

The setting for Gavin Maxwell's 'Ring of Bright Water', Glenelg is a four hour drive north of Glasgow, below the 1,100 foot Mam Ratagan mountain pass.

Once there, however, visitors are rewarded with some of the most stunning scenery and unspoilt environments in the UK.

Christopher Mains, who owns and runs the Glenelg Inn, returned to the area, where his family has lived for generations, 18 years ago, and has stayed ever since.

He has built up the Glenelg Inn into a thriving business throughout that time.

"We are in a remote location, but that's what attracts our visitors," he says.

"Our main holiday season runs from May to October, when our accommodation is key to the success of our business".

The Inn also sees a mini-season in December, where winter breaks are becoming increasingly popular.

Weekend breaks throughout the year include sea cruises, hill walking, waterfall climbing and ceilidhs.

The facilities have gained commendations in The Sunday Times, House and Garden, Scottish Field, Brides Magazine and Room for Romance.

The Glenelg Inn offers seven rooms, all with LPG central heating and water heating as well as panoramic sea views - but no telephones or television!.

"Our guests appreciate the tranquility here," says Christopher.

"They're mostly regular customers, holidaymakers from the UK who want to get away from the pressures of modern life".

There has been an Inn at Glenelg for over 500 years, and the current establishment continues to offer Highland hospitality to visitors as well as serving the local community as its social hub.

It's an Inn in the true sense of the word, offering accommodation as well as drinks and conviviality and, says Christopher, high quality food as an increasingly important part of its revenue.

Apart from quality bar meals, the Inn's dining room provides a range of top quality dishes using fresh local ingredients, with the main focus on seafood, but also an excellent vegetarian menu.

Typical seafood recipes feature squat lobsters, local prawns, monkfish and turbot.

The kitchens are run throughout the main season by Yvonne Winn and Gilles Contier.

Both insist on the control and cook quality which only gas provides, and as a result, all the Glenelg Inn's catering equipment is LPG-powered.

Here Calor meets all requirements.

Two 1,000 litre tanks are installed at the side of the main building and are topped up every three weeks by Calor.

"Calor is a first class supplier," says Christopher.

"Its delivery tanker has to climb over the mountain pass just like everyone else and whether it's been rain, sleet or snow, we've never once been let down, ever.

"That's crucial for us, because our business, our guests and our local community all depend on that reliability, so Calor gives me peace of mind".

Calor's Barry Ohrman points out that the Glenelg Inn demonstrates the advantages of LPG as a fuel, as well as the necessity of dealing with an established supplier.

"The remote location of the Glenelg Inn means that only a supplier of Calor's capability can provide such a network and such reliability," he says.

"Such businesses simply cannot tolerate failure.

It's reassuring to know that whatever the terrain, however remote the location, rural businesses can trust Calor to deliver.".
