Comtec is a company that believes strongly that you need to spend money to make money and the company sees significant future growth through the attraction of company-wide green credentials and a sustainable attitude to business.
Green Core Processes.
Comtec has made considerable investments in its infrastructure, product portfolio and services to help green not just its own processes, but those of its customers too.
The fact that CSR (corporate social responsibility) is seen as less of a tick in the box and more of a fundamental business requirement has driven Comtec to ensure that dealing with Comtec will also make a valuable contribution to the green efforts of its customers.
Working in IT, where always-on, zero-downtime operation is a critical requirement, there is increasing pressure from customers and industry bodies alike to make sure that all IT operations are as energy-efficient as possible, without sacrificing productivity.
In the IT industry, the spotlight when it comes to green issues is firmly placed on the datacentre - the foundation of any ICT network.
For Comtec, the process of 'greening' its own infrastructure and offering its clients the most efficient IT solutions spans the whole supply-chain.
Suppliers - many of the technology vendors that Comtec works with are listed on the Energy Technology List (managed by the Carbon Trust), which allows Comtec clients to benefit from tax relief through the ECA (Enhanced Capital Allowance) scheme.
Talk the talk and walk the walk - Comtec knows better than to tout green products to its customers without presenting a compelling business case.
As such, Comtec has leveraged its significant expertise and portfolio to develop an award-winning datacentre at its headquarters in Reigate.
This datacentre features the most-advanced energy-saving technology in terms of power and cooling (the two biggest issues when it comes to datacentre efficiency).
What is more, the datacentre features bleeding-edge technology in the form of a hydrogen fuel cell (one of only three in operation in UK datacentres) that provides back-up power and ensures maximum network uptime - to put this in context it is worth noting that a hydrogen fuel cell emits only lukewarm water as a waste product! Education for innovation - Comtec are keen to evangelise the economic, environmental and holistic benefits of greener business operation and as such it hosts a series of 'Technology Days' where existing and prospect customer can come and visit the Comtec datacentre to see the benefits of green technology first-hand, making sure that Comtec's customers are aware of the benefits before making any investment.
Carbon offsetting - Whilst a green portfolio and infrastructure will ensure long-term efficiency for Comtec and its clients, there is a need for immediate, tangible and certifiable reductions to organisation's carbon footprints.
To meet this requirement Comtec has teamed up with DEFRA recognised carbon-offsetting organisation Equiclimate.
Working with Equiclimate Comtec offsets significant carbon tonnage on behalf of its clients, certifiably retiring carbon from the market and ensuring that there are less EUA's (EU emissions Allowances) for high-polluting companies to use without having to pay a premium for the privilege.
The knock-on effect of this is that the entire business community must look at improving its business processes in order to remain within the threshold for carbon emissions.
Specialist disposal - The ICT relocations arm of Comtec Enterprises not only relocates business-critical, sensitive ICT infrastructure but also disposes of any obsolete hardware in an ecological way and in accordance with the WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) directive.
Green Accreditations.
Like all companies, Comtec is keen to translate its green efforts into tangible credentials.
In doing so, Comtec is in the process of achieving British Standards Institute environmental management standard ISO 14001.
Currently in the audit stages of this accreditation, Comtec is undergoing assessment by a BSI consultant and the company hopes to achieve full ISO 14001 by mid-2008.
ISO 14001 will enable Comtec to demonstrate:.
* Effective management of environmental risks.
* High environmental standards.
* Adherence to legal and regulatory compliance.
* Company-wide commitment to being lean and green.
Although Comtec operates a culture of efficient and considerate working practices that its employees have all bought in to, the framework provided by an independently audited Environmental Management System will help to ensure that all green efforts made by the company adhere to industry best-practices.
Comtec will continue to deliver on the requirements of ISO 14001 whilst establishing ways to exceed these through innovative business practices and industry-specific capabilities that can translate as benefits to customers and ensure that Comtec remains competitive and considerate.
