Award for Innovation in the Micro-Datacentre

A Comtec Enterprises product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team Feb 21, 2008

Comtec Enterprises recently implemented a state-of-the-art micro-datacentre, incorporating one of the first fully operational hydrogen fuel cells within a datacentre environment.

Datacentre Awards 2007 - Comtec Enterprises Award for Innovation in the Micro-Datacentre.

The majority of data storage and processing activity in the UK takes place in small facilities of fewer than 20 racks, in wiring closets and in computer of LAN rooms.

The efficient design and operation of these 'micro' facilities holds its own challenges.

Space limitations may put pressure on key support functions such as racking configuration, cooling and UPS support.

This Award seeks to recognise those personnel and organisations who have succeeded in meeting the challenges of designing for and operating within the constraints of the micro data facility whether by choice of necessity.

In this context this Award will recognise best practice in all aspects of operating smaller facilities to the same standard as larger facilities in terms of efficiency, scalability, integrity and resilience.

Comtec Enterprises recently implemented a state-of-the-art micro-datacentre, incorporating one of the first fully operational hydrogen fuel cells within a datacentre environment.

Not only does this bolster Comtec's own green credentials, but it provides a platform to build future revenues by enabling existing and prospect customers to gain a tangible insight into the advantages of new, emerging technologies.

Ark Continuity's Tony Over who presented the award and was a member of the judging panel said of the recipient: 'To provide an intelligent 'eco-structure' hosting environment to meet their CSR (corporate social responsibility) objectives, Comtec went to extraordinary lengths to implement a State-of-the-art datacentre, indeed in the micro-datacentre category they incorporated one of the first fully operational hydrogen fuel cells demonstrating the desire to implement new, emerging green technologies'.

Collecting the award for the Innovation in the Micro-Datacentre, Nick Ewing, senior power consultant at Comtec Power, a division of Comtec Enterprises, commented: 'It's great to be recognised for something we do every day.

We work hard to pursue continual improvement, and are always exploring new approaches in how we design, implement and manage datacentres.

This award recognises that we have the right mix of technology know-how, design expertise and integration skills to provide efficient datacentres for our clients.'.
