Goodbye to Carbon, Cars and Coal: Hello to Sustainability. The Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) launched its latest exciting development, WISE (the Wales Institute for Sustainable Education).

The new project will be one of the largest, most comprehensive environmental building projects in the UK It will feature the latest in renewable energy and eco-building technologies

To symbolise the large quantity of carbon dioxide emissions that will be saved by WISE, guests at the projects' launch were invited to make foundation bricks, encasing symbols to represent the 'carbon age', such as model cars and lumps of coal, in eco-friendly earth bricks.

WISE is designed to continue CAT's mission to "inspire, inform and enableý, and to make lifelong learning in sustainability both accessible and affordable.

WISE will be a fitting venue for teaching about sustainability and a welcome increase in CAT's educational capacity.

Over the last ten years, CAT's educational courses programme has expanded more than fivefold.

WISE will enable this growth to continue, delivering additional practical courses in sustainability.

Speaking at the WISE launch, Paul Allen, CAT's Development Director said: "WISE will enable CAT to roll out the experience we have gained over the past three decades to the businesses, organisations and individuals who are making the commitment to sustainability." Construction is expected to commence in the autumn of 2004, with completion scheduled for summer 2006.
