Bauclad high pressure laminate panels from CEP Claddings have provided a splash of colour on an award-winning residential accommodation project at Wisbech, Cambridgeshire.

The Wisbech Foyer is a strikingly modern three-storey building on the town's waterfront which provides accommodation for up to 17 young people between the ages of 16 and 25 Designed by Peterborough architectural practice PDG Architects, it was built by contractor Burmor Construction for Axiom Housing Association as a facility where vulnerable young people could escape the 'no home - no job - no home' cycle and develop new skills and build up their confidence

Axiom is a member of the Foyer Federation, a UK-wide organization devoted to providing a route into employment for disadvantaged young people.

Wisbech Foyer is the latest of Axiom's four foyers, the other three being located in Market Rasen, St Neots and Peterborough.

The building is a masonry cavity wall structure with isolated steel members using a variety of materials including brick, render and CEP's Bauclad panels.

Architect Daniel Coulling explained the choice of cladding: "We wanted a facade that would be crisp, clean and modern.

We specified a high pressure laminate, although we did not specify Bauclad by name.

Burmor, the main contractor, found that only CEP Cladding could supply a suitable product within the short delivery timescale and at a price that was within the budget", says Mr Coulling.

Although PDG Architects had previous experience of Bauclad, Burmor was new to the material.

However, this presented no problems, says site agent Ged Burke: "It was fine to work with - it cut well, was easy to handle and went up without a hitch".

Nevertheless, the installation was potentially tricky, as Daniel Coulling explains: "The profiled stainless steel roof features a curving bullnose detail at the eaves along with a curving facade..

This gave rise to very tight tolerances at the interface between the cladding and roofing elements.

"Instead of relying on drawings, we had templates cut on site and the Bauclad panels were cut in CEP's Hastings factory to match these templates".

In April 2007, this meticulous attention to detail, combined with an excellent design and a high standard of workmanship, earned the project the "Best Public/Community Project" award at the 2007 LABC East Anglia region "Built In Quality" Awards.

The 6 mm blue Bauclad panels are face-fixed to timber battens using colour-coded screws and secret fixings to ensure a smooth surface.

Bauclad is suitable for most building applications and is especially popular for schools and public buildings where its strength and durability pay dividends.

Available in a range of colours and finishes - from subtle pastel shades to bright, vibrant primary colours and timber-effects - Bauclad will not fade in sunlight and is resistant to staining.

It is extremely weather-resistant and has a hard surface that will withstand impact and abrasion without noticeable deterioration.

These characteristics make Bauclad a virtually maintenance-free cladding option.

Completed last Winter , the Wisbech Foyer received its first resident shortly before Christmas and is now fully occupied.

The 17 residents, who were all previously homeless and unemployed, now have their own private en-suite bedrooms with shared living and kitchen accommodation.

Part of the remit of the Foyer Federation is the re-habilitation and re-training of its residents and so the ground floor at Wisbech Foyer comprises two training suites, including a computer room, where residents can re-train for a new start in life.
