Colorpan, the high-performance weatherboarding system from CEP Cladding, has been used to create a striking modern facade for a new social housing development in Preston, Lancashire.

The GBP6 million Oxford Street development, on Preston's Avenham Housing Estate, was built by design-build contractor Rowlinsons Construction for Avenquest Homes, a subsidiary of social housing provider Contour The new development comprises 32 flats in a four-storey building which forms part of a larger project to replace obsolete and derelict post-war housing with contemporary high-quality family homes

The ground floor facade is of red facing brick and the second is of buff brick with a stone string course dividing the two storeys.

Above second storey, the facade is clad with Colorpan Pine weatherboarding, providing a visual contrast with the brickwork below.

In addition, the circular lounge areas which create a corner feature of the new building, are clad entirely in Colorpan Pine boarding.

In total, some 300 sq m of Colorpan weatherboarding has been used on this project.

Damian Utton, practice director with architect Pozzoni LLP, explains that Colorpan's durability and visual appeal made it the ideal choice: "We wanted the aesthetic of natural wood but without the maintenance requirements" says Mr Utton.

"For a housing association, maintenance is a big issue and for that reason natural wood was out" comments Mr Utton.

"Colorpan, however, is maintenance-free".

With a core of sustainable natural wood particles impregnated and bound together with synthetic resin, Colorpan is a durable, stable and zero-maintenance alternative to natural timber.

Its phenolic film outer layer and acrylic finish create an impermeable barrier to moisture and produce a high density, hard-wearing product capable of withstanding extremes of temperature and humidity without peeling, blistering, rotting or fading.

When installed, Colorpan gives the effect of traditional timber weatherboarding.

With its wood-grain textured surface and choice of traditional or 'American sidings' profile, the assembled cladding is virtually indistinguishable from a conventional timber-clad facade.

Unlike the original, however, it is far stronger and more durable.

Tongue-and-groove joints and pre-drilled secret fixing slots make for a neat and robust installation.

A choice of 71 colours and 7 wood-grains guarantee versatility.

Pozzoni's decision to use Colorpan was heavily influenced by two earlier projects, also on the Avenham Estate.

"We used CEP's Bauclad panels to re-clad two nearby tower blocks about three years ago" comments Mr Utton.

"On these projects we found that CEP delivered a quality product and excellent service, so we had no hesitation specifying CEP again".

Colorpan weatherboarding can be applied to a timber or metal sub-frame using stainless steel fixings through pre-punched holes provided in the tongue of the board.

A full range of accessories, including corner profiles and foam sealing strip is available.
