ABC Sets First Benchmark In Apprentice Recruitment
The Association of Brickwork Contractors (ABC) has exceeded it's expectations by collectively recruiting 77 new apprentice bricklayers.
Guy Lawson, chief executive of CfM, said: "Apprenticeships are the lifeblood of the construction industry and this scheme is about rewarding and recognise talent across the Merseyside area.
"Construction is a highly skilled field and one of the key aims of CfM is to encourage local employers to contribute to the growth of Merseyside's pool of skilled construction labour.
To ensure the long term competitiveness of Merseyside contractors, it is crucial that employers recognise the benefits of taking on apprentices".
Winners of the first phase of the CfM Apprentice of the Year awards will be announced by area; Knowsley, Sefton, Wirral, Halton, St Helens and Liverpool.
As well as receiving a prestigious CfM award, winners of the first round will be given a cash prize of andpound;300.
Judges will then select an overall winner, who will be awarded the accolade 'CfM Merseyside Apprentice of the Year' and £1,000.
Employers should visit www.cfm-ltd.uk.com or contact Pete Lappin on 0151 227 1801 for details on how to nominate apprentices for an award.
Nominations are being received until 20th November 2006.
CfM was launched earlier this year to combat skills shortages in the construction industry.
Through its Merseyside Construction Charter, CfM asks developers to commit to using local contractors and sub-contractors.
It also requires signatories to cascade a training agreement through the supply chain, asking sub-contractors to commit to providing apprenticeships and work placements and to invest in the skills of existing workers.
The initiative has received financial support from the European Objective One programme, the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA) and Cityfocus (Single Regeneration Budget) plus the Sector Development Programme run by The Mersey Partnership.
