Coltman Precast Concrete is one of the first companies in its field to introduce the Airtek TruckMat inflatable safety system.

Coltman Precast Concrete has maintained its drive to improve health and safety standards by becoming one of the first companies in its field to introduce the Airtek TruckMat inflatable safety system The independent supplier of precast concrete products has invested almost GBP20,000 in six sets of the inflatable mattress system

They are used when unloading products from the delivery vehicle on site and provide a safe landing area around the vehicle for employees should they fall.

Said Mick Thurman, Coltman's Health and Safety Manager: "We've always been heavily committed to the safety of our staff, which is why we have adopted the new TruckMat system.

"When unloading the products on site there is a potential risk to the operative who is working at height on the delivery vehicle.

I'm pleased to say that the introduction of this new system has proved effective in controlling and reducing that risk".

The TruckMat system consists of nine inflatable mattresses that are inter-connected and can be used with a range of trailers and vehicles.

They have been tested in conjunction with the Building Research Establishment and British Safety Council, achieving accreditation from both.

In other health and safety developments, members of Coltman's sales force and other head office staff such as quantity surveyors and estimators, who need to make site visits, have been issued with Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) cards, which are already carried by site gangs.

"This is to ensure that all the company's front-line staff, as well as the site operatives, are accredited to the scheme", said Mick Thurman.

"We are also reviewing our procedures in line with the new Construction Design Management regulations, particularly the way design teams carry out their designer's risk assessments".

As Chairman of the Precast Flooring Federation's Health and Safety committee, Mr Thurman is currently heavily involved in drawing up the new Code of Practice for the Safe Erection of Precast Concrete Flooring and Associated Components.

This is due to be introduced later this year.

Established in 1972, Coltman is one of the largest independent suppliers of precast concrete products to the housing, commercial, industrial, health and leisure sectors of the construction industry nationwide.

Products include prestressed hollowcore wideslab and solid prestressed wideslab for flooring and roofing, together with staircases, landings, balconies, terracing and wall units, as well as bespoke items.
