Plugging Hole in Flood Risk Assessment Guidance

A CIRIA product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team May 29, 2003

In the last ten years the increased risk and frequency of major flooding events in the UK has presented significant challenges for the construction industry.

The ODPM's Planning Policy Guidance Note (PPG25) Development And Flood Risk explains how flood risk should be considered at all stages of the planning and development process to reduce the future damage to property and loss of life.

CIRIA's new project Development and flood risk - guidance for the construction industry will provide advice for the construction industry on working with PPG25 by developing guidance on how and why flood risk from rivers, coast and groundwater should be assessed in land use planning.

It will also provide instruction on how the related planning conditions can be met in a proper and efficient manner.

The project outputs will be aimed primarily at developers and construction clients, and will also be relevant to planners, regulators, facility managers and members of the public living in areas at risk.

Elizabeth Holliday, Research Manager at CIRIA, said: "This project will greatly assist developers, planners and the construction industry to meet the challenges presented by increasing flood risk and the current government planning guidance.
