Earth reinforcement that hits the nail
on the head

CIRIA's new report 'Soil nailing - best practice guidance' provides information about the design, installation, testing and maintenance of soil nailing as a slope stabilisation system

Soil nailing has become a well established method of stabilisation and retention of existing retaining walls or unstable slopes and the construction of new steep slopes or new retaining walls Its use has seen rapid expansion in the UK - case study data shows about a twenty-fold increase in the decade to 2003

Future investment in transport infrastructure is likely to see a further increase in its popularity.

However there has sometimes been a lack of understanding of soil nailing techniques and anecdotal evidence exists within the industry of problems and failures during construction due to misapplication of the method.

CIRIA's new report Soil nailing - best practice guidance provides information about the design, installation, testing and maintenance of soil nailing as a slope stabilisation system for new and remedial works and draws together the many research reports, codes, specifications, standards and procedures that contain relevant information.

The report improves on the previously available published advice in areas such as the design and detailing of flexible and soft facings, the design of soil nailing using a Eurocode 7 approach and the use of soil nailing for stabilising existing slopes and walls.
