Sustainable water management in land-use
planning

CIRIA's new publication Sustainable water management in land-use planning (C630) provides guidance on how water-related issues may be considered within the spatial planning process.

A better flow between planning policy and sustainable water management The UK is in the middle of its worse drought for 30 years

A sustained growth in demand for water over the last 50 years coupled with climate-change induced hotter, drier summers has added to pressure on water supplies, often leading to water shortages.

The UK's demand for new housing development is likely add to the burden.

In the South East of England, the Government's commitment to build 120,000 new homes by 2016 in the Thames Gateway area will further increase demand for water.

In recent months much of the media's attention has focused on the need to reduce leakage and develop innovative ways of increasing water supply, however output from a recent CIRIA project suggests that this is only part of the solution and highlights the need for better links between sustainable water management and spatial planning policy and the development of a portfolio of options to help manage the demand-supply balance.

CIRIA's new publication Sustainable water management in land-use planning (C630) provides guidance on how water-related issues may be considered within the spatial planning process and points to how sustainable water management can be achieved through improved collaboration between the stakeholders involved.

The book provides information on sustainable water management and where it links in with planning policy and includes details of options available for surface water drainage, pollution prevention, managing development in areas at risk of flooding and promoting the sustainable use of water.
