Koolshade takes heat out of school meal prep

A Coopers Fire and Smoke Engineeering product story

Koolshade system substantially reduced the penetration of solar radiation and completely cut out glare from the sun in the food preparation area of Ursuline Convent High School.

Coopers were called in to solve an overheating problem in the food preparation area of Ursuline Convent High School in Brentwood.

A school that has increased its capacity from 15 girls in its foundation year in 1900 to currently over 400, all in its old original Victorian building.

The section of the school that houses the dining facilities and food preparation areas was built back in 1939 and is south facing.

The traditional brick building recently had new UPVC double glazed windows installed, and during the summer months was subjected to a very high solar heat gain.

The installation of a Koolshade system to the outside of the south facing windows substantially reduced the penetration of solar radiation into the building, and completely cut out glare from the sun - both of which were causing potential food hygiene hazards.

Koolshade also dramatically improved ventilation by allowing the windows to be opened while the food preparation was taking place, without the risk of insects and other airborne contaminants penetrating the area.

With all work being carried out on the outside of the building, the whole system was installed with minimum interruption to staff members, all within 5 working days from delivery of materials to moving off site.

Apart from providing the school with a highly efficient solar shading solution and improving the working environment, Koolshade has made a vast improvement to the appearance of an aging building.
