Smoke containment in Hong Kong - test for Coopers

Probably one of the most striking and technically challenging projects that Coopers has undertaken to date is the recent installation in the new shopping mall at Langham Place in Hong Kong.

The mall is only a short distance across a footbridge from the luxurious Langham Hotel.

The project comprises a complex smoke control system that provides smoke containment for a large central atrium that spans several floors.

Smoke barriers are located within the space above the false ceiling, and carefully positioned to mirror the perimeter of the overhung void edge some 12 metres below.

The barriers are an integrated part of a total smoke control system and due to their excessive drop have been fitted with a unique cable guidance mechanism to ensure deflection of the barriers is minimised - ensuring that the gaps between them remains under 60 millimetres.

The system at Langham Placeis the first large commercial development in an area which is located in Mongkok, an old part of the city.

The project is part of the Government's urban re-development scheme to regenerate older, run-down sectors in Hong Kong.

The installation is yet another demonstration of the innovative technology that puts Coopers out in front of its competitors.
